it’s a baby thing: the importance of fluids during pregnancy

We all know that a pregnant woman is supposed to drink more water than the average non-pregnant person, right? Like 10 glasses instead of 8 or something like that. So, probably a 6oz cup of 1/2 caf coffee and a couple sips of Coca Cola is not enough for about 8 hours of the day. Nope. Not even close. Know why? I do!

Because you’ll pass out in front of all of your co-workers!

Whoops! I sort of did that yesterday. I ate two pop-tarts for breakfast. Not two packages – just two that come in one foil package. And I had a cup of 1/2 caffeine coffee. It was like my 4th cup since finding out I’m pregnant. I don’t drink a lot of coffee. Then I had a few animal crackers before lunch. For lunch I had half of my Victory Garden Soup. I was full and not feeling the best so I couldn’t finish it. It was still a pretty good sized portion though, I thought. Then I headed over to our West office for a meeting with a new agent. I was very thirsty (who woulda thunk, considering I’ve had approximately nothing to drink at this point in the day) so I grabbed one of the Coca Cola’s left over from Labor Day vacation (yes they’re still in my car!) and had a few sips.

I finished my meeting just fine and walked around the building to see if anyone else had questions. I stopped to talk to Brianna and we were talking about pregnancy and such. She recently lost her twins at about 18 weeks. We started talking about morning sickness and I started to feel a little flush. I figured we’d wrap up the conversation and I’d go get a drink but I didn’t make it that far. All of a sudden I was hot and dizzy and said that I was a little dizzy.

Then I woke up on the floor with my head smashed against the cubicle behind me. Another co-worker was already on the phone with 911. At that point I was somewhat awake but I couldn’t keep my eyes open. The paramedics got there within a few minutes and took vitals. I had a high pulse and normal BP. They stood me up to take vitals again. My BP dropped and my pulse jumped to 126! They asked how I was feeling and I said, “hmm OK. Not good but OK.” and they said, “Well based on your stats and the way you look, I think it’s best that we take you in.” Ok. I agreed because I was a little worried about the baby and I was just so freakin drowsy still that I just wanted to lay down!

So they got me into the ambulance and gave me some oxygen and an IV. I felt immediately better. Got to the hospital for an ECG, blood-work, and fetal heart rate check. All was fine! The stuff they checked in my blood – sodium, potassium, probably some other crap – came back a little low but everything was balanced which showed that I was indeed dehydrated. Heart was fine. Baby’s heart was fine at 168 bpm. After the IV was finished, I was sent home.

We called my dad, who was in the middle of a tattoo 45+ minutes away, because we weren’t sure if I’d be out in time to get Isabelle. Turns out he didn’t need to come but it was good to have him there. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time Johnas has had to call and say, “Um Bill, Jess is in the ER.” Actually, I’m pretty sure I was in the exact same room last time.

I was pretty certain as soon as I realized I passed out that I was dehydrated so all I felt was embarrassed. Well that and tired and nauseous! But, I was lucky to have caring co-workers to take care of me and get help.

So far today I’ve put down about 30 oz of water and 20 oz of juice. That’s pretty good for only being 4:30, right? Well, compared to yesterday anyway.

Peace and Craziness: Most Sensitive Pregnancy Tests

With my expansion of readership, I’ve gotten several messages saying that I’m neglecting my many friends that are trying to conceive or are currently pregnant. Yes, I must admit that I have! When you’re no longer in that phase yourself, it is hard to write on such topics. I asked them all to give me what they’d love for me to blog about – and I was excited to hear that a lot of the info they want is factual. Mainly – PREGNANCY TEST INFORMATION. I vividly recall reading everything I could get my hands on about pregnancy tests when trying to conceive Samuel, so, I will happily share what I have learned over my own infertility struggle with anyone that finds themself in the same boat.

Let’s keep this pretty simple. You want to know: What is the most sensitive pregnancy test on the market? The answer might surprise you!

One of the most sensitive tests available in the USA comes in a simple box in a store that many children love. The $Tree. Oh yes… that cheap looking $1 pregnancy test behind the counter is said to be a highly sensitive brand. Some tests show it to measure as little as 17mIU (mIU = thousandths of International Units). When testing early and often, those $Tree tests become a baby-obsessed girl’s best friend!

Amazingly, the Dollar Store’s brand of pregnancy test also ranks as another of the most sensitive measuring around 20mIU. Another great deal – another great pregnancy test.

If you’re okay with spending more, First Responce Early Result test claims to measure as little as 15mIU.. but may need as much as 25mIU to detect pregnancy.

Most of the well known tests turn positive with 25+ mIU. Brands such as:

Target Brand – 25mIU
Walgreens +/- – 25mIU
Fact Plus – 25mIU
Equate – 25mIU
EPT – 25mIU
Cearblue Easy – 25mIU
Answer – 25mIU

My pregnancy test of choice was always $tree. Cheap and accurate. The only downside with cheaper tests, from personal experience, is there is an increased chance for evaporation lines. (dull colored lines that appear in the positive section of a pregnancy test – typically occur well after the recommended “reading” time.)

One downfall that some of my online TTC friends have encountered with the very sensitive tests is detecting a pregnancy very early, only to have it end in a very early miscarriage. Often times a miscarriage can occur so early that a woman would have never known she was pregnant at all. This can lead to a lot of emotional stress – so choose wisely how much you really want to know when seeking out the appropriate test for your situation. Many of these sensitive tests might detect pregnancy a few days before your period is even late.

If you have your own pregnancy test advice to share, drop it in the comments section. Many women will read this and you never know who it might help. Happy testing!

The subtitle of The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy

The subtitle of The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy, by Vicki Iovine is “Or Everything Your Doctor Won’t Tell You.” That’s exactly why I liked it so much!

When I put out the call for pregnancy book recommendations, you ladies came through in a BIG WAY with this book. Just as the title promises, the book is full of straight talk and advice on every aspect of this pregnancy thing. Iovine rarely sugar coats, though she is very much like a supportive and encouraging friend. She’s also not going to blow sunshine up anyone’s ass. Does labor hurt? HELL YES! Is it hard to take off the weight? Sorta, but it does come off! Is your male other half freaked out? Yep, probably.

Iovine herself has four children (mostly grown now), and shies away from nothing in this book. Not only is it honest, it’s hilarious. One section titled “Multiple Personality Disorder” which relates to pregnancy and sex really appealed to me, and I insisted on reading it aloud to Chuck through my giggles:

The thing that amazed my Girlfriends and me about the emotional life of pregnant women, particularly where sex was concerned, was the intensity of all the emotions you feel and the rapidity with which they change. You may spend the entire day fantasizing about wild animal sex with your partner, to the point where you chew off all your fingernails waiting for him to meet you at home. Then, when he finally arrives and starts going through the mail instead of studying the ultrasound photos that you just got, without him, at your morning appointment and have loving placed on the front door, you start screaming that this is one more undeniable sign that he is indifferent to you and the baby. By the time he has calmed you down and you go whimpering into the bathroom to refresh yourself and consider whether you’re still horny, you’ve fallen asleep in the tub and he’s pulling you out before you drown.

Hilarious, not just in regards to sex, but the emotional roller coaster in general. Chuck and I woke up earlyish for a Saturday in order to go look at a potential rental property with more bedrooms than we have now. I was smiley and nice to him this morning, and I assured him that I really was in a good mood. “For how long?” he laughed. “At least 20 minutes,” I replied.

That pretty much says it!

While the more medical of the pregnancy books are great–especially those like The Joy of Pregnancy that have a good deal of technical info and are broken down into the baby’s developmental stages–it’s necessary to have a good mix of soothing and straightforward. This book reminded me a great deal of talking to my mom (complete with her smartass sense of humor) about pregnancy if my mom could remember any of it. Apparently she was never morning sick, never overly tired, and got to skip out on some of the other unpleasantries of pregnancy. Or she’s lying. Or she’s blocked it all out in the last 28 (almost 29!) years.

Iovine’s life is a little unrealistic to most of us. She lives in California, has a good many model and actress friends, and a maid, but on the whole I didn’t find her too pretentious. She keeps the richer-than-thou talk to a minimum, but I do wish I had that cleaning lady and no need to work sometimes. Dream a little dream! *plays the world’s tiniest violin*

If you’re expecting or expect you might be expecting soon, read it! If you just want to giggle with the rest of us, read it for that, too.

Pregnancy Update:

  • Still nauseous (all the time).
  • Still sleepy (all the time).
  • Still cranky, I mean happy, I mean cranky, I mean tearful. You get the picture.
  • Still REALLY excited!
