As both a public health researcher and a new mom, I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is planning to get pregnant at some point in the future. There is a vast body of research emerging that suggests that prenatal (and even preconception!) influences can impact lifelong health. Dr. Lu is one of the outstanding researchers in this field and here he shares his wealth of knowledge with women who are planning pregnancies. As he shares specific tips for preparing for pregnancy (such as ways to reduce stress and clear your home of potentially harmful chemical exposures), Lu explains the science behind the recommendations in an accessible way.

I’ll admit that I know Dr. Lu well, so this is not an entirely unbiased review. It is, however, an informed review- knowing the level of expertise Dr. Lu brings to the subject as well as how much his patients and students respect his thoughtful recommendations, any woman planning a pregnancy would be well-advised to read Get Ready to Get Pregnant. For many women (and men!), having a child is one of the most important things they’ll ever do and so starting pregnancy as well informed as possible will make it a more successful experience and give their children the best possible start on life.

This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is “just for men.” I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a “man-to-man” sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don’t cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is….and so on. I felt like it was an episode of the Maury show or something. Men are just as stressed out as women about the whole pregnancy thing, and I feel that this portion of the book adds unnecessary stress. The book should have simply provided information about how to make good sperm and give support – the end. I think the chapter for men defeated the purpose of preparing both parents for creating a healthy and smart baby. I hope Dr. Lu reads this review and takes this into consideration for future editions.

This book is for everyone, not exclusive to those wanting to “Get Ready To Get Pregnant”. Well researched, sound advice for all aspects of prenatal care. Helpful facts regarding nutrition, detoxifying your environment, strengthening your immune system (and more!). It’s very relevant for females and males. I especially liked the section for the male readers, and the importance of giving emotional support to your spouse/significant other. The book is a fast, easy read, loaded with practical tips. I’ll be gifting this book to all my friends that are preparing for a baby, and my friends that are looking to improve their own health; in their homes, diet, reducing stress.

This is a great book. Simple, clear, informative – in fact, it is a great read for anyone, not just moms or dads-to-be. If you have any proclivities, allergies, diseases, etc. this book points out how they may have developed while in utero. Fascinating read and well written.

If you are looking for a straight-forward, list-driven, do- and do-not type of pregnancy planning book, this is it. It’s full of important, easy-to-understand advice, much of which I am taking to heart as we begin to think about pregnancy. I like the top 10 lists. I think it is too simple and dry if you are looking for a book with a more emotional connection. I only gave it four stars because I think it can cause some women undue anxiety because some of what the author presents as big toxic monsters is simply unavoidable. Overall, I recommend this book as a supplement to other pregnancy books, not as a stand-alone.
